Coastal Lakes

The Monmouth County Health Department (MCHD) monitors the nine coastal lakes through our ambient surface monitoring program, storm water infrastructure investigations, and the cooperative coastal monitoring program (CCMP).

In 1988 and 1989 the MCHD worked in conjunction with numerous state and local entities to complete an intensive study of the nine coastal lakes.  Surface water samples were collected from each of the lakes during spring, fall, and summer sampling events. Physical parameters of the water were measured and the samples were analyzed for nutrients and bacteria. Algae samples were collected and the total percentage of algae present in the lake and species were identified. Storm drains were located and sampled. Selected infrastructure investigations were made that lead to the discovery of cross connections that were repaired, improving water quality.  Inlets, outlets, and upstream surveys were conducted that identified tributaries flowing into the lakes and the sizes and materials of the inlets and outlets.
