Accessible Bus and Rail Services

Many NJ TRANSIT and Academy bus and rail routes are accessible to persons with disabilities and limited mobility. Lift equipped and kneeling buses operate on many bus routes and many rail stations feature ramp or elevator accessibility and platform to train transfer bridges. NJ TRANSIT Access Link

NJ TRANSIT provides services known as Access Link for individuals with disabilities that prevent them from using existing fixed route services. Access Link provides flexible curb-to-curb transportation on a next-day reservation basis from locations within 3/4 of a mile of fixed route bus lines. Users must meet eligibility requirements and apply for acceptance into the program. For information about Access Link service in Monmouth County call 1(800) 955-ADA1.

Monmouth County Special Citizens Area Transportation (SCAT) Program

The Monmouth County Department of Transportation offers paratransit services to individuals of 60 years of age or older, disabled persons over the age of 18, and military veterans. The Special citizens Area Transportation (SCAT) Program provides transportation for services such as food shopping, medical appointments, and veteran’s services, as well as more casual weekday trips. Riders are required to schedule trips four days in advance and pay a fare. SCAT service is based strictly upon availability.

Service animals and personal aids are welcome to accompany riders at no additional charge. All vehicles are handicapped accessible, and drivers are trained to safely load and unload wheelchair passengers. People who are temporarily disabled due to an accident or medical condition are also eligible for SCAT services.

Services to Veteran Administration hospitals and clinics in Brick, Lyons, East Orange, and Tinton Falls are available free of charge to military veterans.

EZ Ride

EZ Ride offers many services ranging from paratransit to carpooling and vanpooling. Most notably their Flex T Mobility and Ride4Life Programs offer trips to those unable to drive themselves.

Flex-T Mobility is EZ Ride’s paratransit service. Rides can be scheduled a minimum of one day in advance and cost the user a per mileage fee. To confirm service availability in your area email FlexT@ezride.org or call (732)380-1299.

Ride4Lyfe uses rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft to provide rides. Those without smart phones can call (866) 208-1307 Option 4 to speak to a Ride4Life operator request a rideshare in real time. This service is available between 8AM - 8PM Monday to Friday and 8AM - 5PM on weekends for a small fee.

These programs are membership-based. Riders fill out a registration form and establish a transportation account using a credit or debit card. All fees and charges are collected in advance from your credit/debit card’s available balance. Money is never exchanged between riders and drivers.
